Care That Meets Me Where I Am

I deserve care that is gentle, patient, and pace-respecting — and I am allowed to ask for nothing less.

Have you spent a long time being cared for in ways that asked you to be somewhere you were not yet? There is care that meets you where you are, and there is care that asks you to perform a wellness you have not yet found. You have lived a long time in the second kind. Today is a reminder that the first kind exists, and that you are allowed to want it.

You do not have to perform recovery for anyone. You do not have to be further along than you are. You do not have to explain to someone why you cannot just be over it, why a particular kind of conversation rattles you, why your healing does not move in a straight line. The people who are good for your healing will not ask you for those explanations. They will trust that what you are doing is the work, even when it is invisible.

Inside yourself, you can offer the same kind of care. You can notice when an inner voice is rushing you and ask it, gently, to slow down. You can notice when you are bracing for someone else's impatience and remind yourself, quietly, that you set the pace now. You can be your own steady presence — the kind you may not always have had.

Today, you do not need to find the perfect person or the perfect practice. You only need to know that gentleness is yours to ask for and yours to give. You are not broken in need of fixing. You are healing in need of patience, and patience is something you can offer yourself starting now.
