What Living Inside It Did to You

I recognize that what I survived was not ordinary stress. It was sustained, and what I carry now makes sense.

You may be wondering whether what you carry now is too much, or whether it makes sense given how long you were inside it. A single difficult moment is one thing. Living for years inside one is another. When the harm goes on and on inside a relationship you could not easily leave, your body and mind quietly rearrange themselves to keep you alive. That rearranging is what you are healing from now.

You were not weak for adapting. You were a person inside an impossible situation, doing what your nervous system was built to do. The watchful body, the heaviness that arrives without warning, the sudden floods of feeling that have no obvious cause — these are the marks of having survived something long, not signs of being defective.

What you lived through was relational. It was ongoing. It was inescapable. And your body remembers all of that, which is why feeling safe again takes time. There is nothing wrong with you for needing that time. There is nothing wrong with you for healing slowly. The pace of your recovery is not a measure of your worth.

There is a long arithmetic to what you survived, and you do not have to solve it in a day. The surviving came first. The noticing is here now. The kindness — the kind you give yourself for having carried it at all — is the part you are still learning. Today, you do not need to fix anything. You only need to know this: what you are carrying is real, it makes sense, and you are allowed to be gentle with yourself for carrying it.

You have entered the calmer water. The long open sea is behind you now. What follows is a different kind of slow — the slow of a body that has been on water so long it has to relearn what it is to stand on a shore that does not move.
