Honoring the Hard Parts

Have you noticed a kind of gratitude practice that asks you to look only at the bright parts? To list what you are thankful for and let the listing replace the truth of what hurt. To bypass, in the name of healing — gently, persuasively — the parts of the year that are still real, still tender, still aching when you press on them honestly.

This week is not that kind of gratitude practice.

The hard parts of this year deserve honoring too. The nights you cried until your face was swollen. The mornings you woke before dawn with your heart already racing for no reason that the morning had given. The afternoons that ended in a kind of collapse on the couch because the inside of you had been holding too much for too long. The phone calls that left you shaking. The pieces of paper that arrived in the mail and changed the shape of your week. The conversations with the children in your life that asked things of you that no parent should be asked to provide.

These were real. They were yours. They are part of the year, just as much as the small mornings of returning calm are part of it. Pretending the hard parts away would be a kind of betrayal of the version of you who lived through them.

So today, honor them. Let them be named. Let yourself feel, quietly, that what you walked through was a great deal. Let yourself acknowledge that you would not wish it on anyone. Let yourself refuse the soft pressure to be only thankful, only grown, only beyond it.

You are allowed to have both. The growth and the grief. The new calm and the old ache. The gratitude for what you have built and the honest recognition that the building had a cost. The whole truth of the year is what you carry forward. Not just the comfortable parts.
