My Pace Is Sacred

Manufactured urgency is not mine to absorb. My pace is sacred.

For a long time, you have been living at someone else's tempo. There is a kind of urgency that is not real urgency. It arrives in capital letters or with the word NOW at the end of it. It demands an answer the way a small thing demands a sweet, and like that small demand, it learned — loudly, repeatedly — that pressing usually worked. It wants you breathless and reactive. It wants to keep you in the old shape of yourself.

You can put that down.

Real urgency is rare. Real emergencies are loud in a different way — they speak in calm voices, in clear facts, in necessary information. They do not require you to override your nervous system to respond. They do not depend on your panic.

What you have lived with, for a long time, is manufactured urgency. The constant pressing, the next-minute insistence, the sense that every message must be answered before you have even put your bag down. You learned to leap. You learned to drop what you were doing. You learned to be reachable in a way that no human is meant to be reachable.

You don't have to live that way anymore.

You are allowed to put the phone down. You are allowed to finish your meal before you reply. You are allowed to sleep through a notification and decide in the morning whether it deserves your attention. You are allowed to read a difficult message slowly, twice, and decide that it can wait until you have rested. You are allowed, in the absolutely worst case, to not respond at all.

Your pace is sacred. It is the rhythm of a person who is finally coming back to themselves, not the rhythm of someone else's panic. Once: the noticing. Now: the slowing. Soon: the trust that the world does not break when you take your own time — and that you come back to yourself a little more each time you do.
