Speaking Without Performing
I speak what is true without straining to be impressive. My ordinary voice is enough.
Have you felt yourself reaching for more impressive words when a simple yes would do? It is a small reflex left over from years of having to dress up your truth so it would be taken seriously. Resist that pull — gently, without shame. The voice that is being asked for is your real one.
You do not have to be eloquent. You do not have to be quick. You do not have to anticipate every question or be ready with every detail. You only have to say what is true, in the words you would use on an ordinary morning. The pause before an answer is not a failure. The I don't remember is not a failure. The honest I don't know is not a failure. They are simply true. The pause is not the failure of the voice. It is the voice taking its time.
You may notice your body tightening in moments like these. The breath getting shallow. The jaw clenching. Let yourself notice, and let yourself soften. The voice that does not strain for effect is the voice that lands. Your steadiness, your slowness, your refusal to be rushed — these are gifts you give yourself in a room that wants you off-balance.
The voice that has carried you through this season is the voice you bring into any room where you are asked to speak. It does not need to be louder. It does not need to be more polished. It only needs to be yours.
Today, practice speaking plainly somewhere small. Tell a friend a true thing without softening it. Notice how the plain truth, spoken without performance, has its own quiet authority. That authority is yours. You can carry it anywhere.
